Life in Malaya under Japanese Occupation

Download Programme Booklet (PDF)

The Japanese occupation divides the twentieth-century history of Malaysia into two parts, 1900-40 and 1945 onward. It has often been characterized as a major watershed, an event that put an end to the old order and created a new, but remarkably little is known about what happened during the occupation, and its significance is often assumed rather than demonstrated. Those who experienced the occupation first hand kept its memory alive for many years, but each succeeding generation finds their war stories less compelling, and young people know little about the events of this period.
