The LIID project aims to bring together local stakeholders and the Local Council to enhance and improve the Little India “experience” by adopting best practices in “Place-making”. The Little India Precinct in the George Town World Heritage Site is one of the most vibrant and diverse areas in terms of culture and culinary experience. Yet, local traders are not benefiting from increased tourism as traffic congestion remains a major problem.
The local community also feels that the “place-identity” is not as strong or as vibrant as it used to be. The reactivated Little India Joint Action Committee (LIJAC), facilitated by Think City, is working together with the local council and local stakeholders have the shared objective of protecting and enhancing Little India as a cultural heritage place. LIJAC is currently working towards an area development Master Plan from a series workshops, technical consultation and public engagements.
