To achieve our mission of revitalising George Town, we partnered with Chief Minister Incorporated, Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang, and George Town World Heritage Incorporated to upgrade the Lebuh Armenian and Lebuh Acheh neighbourhood.
The Armenian Park Improvement Project was launched by YAB Chief Minister of Penang on October 2015 as one of several catalytic projects in the neighbourhood. Upgrades to the area included soft landscaping, lighting, and building spaces to sit and relax under the comfort of the trees. The basketball court was retained but re-orientated to serve as a multipurpose event space. Other plans for improvement include refurbishing the Youth Centre in the near future.
The Lebuh Armenian Park is one of the few green spaces in the George Town World Heritage Site which has seen recent improvements to the park and surrounding spaces. In 2012, Think City supported a landscape plan for the existing green space and oversaw the ‘greening’ of nearby Lebuh Carnarvon.
The plans to upgrade Armenian Park were informed by a number of formal consultative initiatives. While prior plans included these upgrades in a wider “Greening George Town” programme, the more recent plans have been informed by a baseline survey of the residents.
