About The Light Project

The Light Project is an extension of CENDANA’s yearly marquee event Art In The City in collaboration with Think City to light up cities with public art and performances curated to take place in selected cities nationwide. The effort is scheduled to take place as temporary installations with curated performances and aims to:

  • Keep cities alive during the pandemic via public art (using light);
  • To inspire and give hope to the wider arts and culture communities and the public to rise from the pandemic;
  • Stimulate conversations and create job opportunities for local artists, cultural workers, production crew, fabricators and more within the selected cities;
  • Support out of the box creativity beyond Klang Valley that may nurture other collaborations; and
  • Harmonise public and private stakeholders in protecting and contributing to development of the sector.

Successful Projects

Butterworth

Padang Dato Haji Ahmad Badawi, Butterworth is next to Dewan Dato Haji Ahmad Badawi located at Jalan Bagan Luar and managed by Majlis Bandaraya Seberang Perai. The field is a popular location for public events and is within walking distance to the Butterworth Art Walk.

Padang Dato Haji Ahmad Badawi, Butterworth terletak di sebelah Dewan Dato Haji Ahmad Badawi di Jalan Bagan Luar dan diurus oleh Majlis Bandaraya Seberang Perai. Padang tersebut merupakan sebuah tapak popular di mana pelbagai acara awam terkenal pernah dilangsungkan, berhampiran dengan Butterworth Art Walk.

THE ARC is based on the story of the Penang Strait – which over history has provided deepwater passage for many ships and vessels to the Port of Penang in Butterworth. The installation consists of a lit curved structure about 8 meters in height and width that lights up the padang as part of the public art in Butterworth, while doubling as a backdrop/stage for the various performances and programmes planned.

The Arc diilhamkan berdasarkan sejarah Selat Penang yang pernah berkhidmat sebagai laluan pengangkutan yang penting untuk perkapalan dan pengkalan di Pulau Pinang. Karya ini dihasilkan dengan struktur melengkung dengan ketinggian dan keluasan sepanjang 8 meter yang bakal menyalakan padang, di samping menjadi pentas bagi program yang bakal berlangsung di tapak.

Zaini Zainul
Arkitek/Architect

Zaini Zainul is the managing director of Zart Eventive. As an architect, art lover, art collector, sculptor and painter, he has many interests in art and architecture though his current passion is on strengthening unity within the community of his hometown, Butterworth, Penang through art-related programmes and events.

Zaini Zainul adalah pengarah urusan Zart Eventive. Sebagai seorang arkitek, pencinta seni, kolektor seni, pengarca dan pelukis, beliau sangat berminat dalam senilukis dan seni bina namun kini menumpukan minatnya ke meperkukuhkan perpaduan dalam komuniti kampung halamannya, Butterworth, Pulau Pinang dengan program dan acara berkaitan seni.

Ipoh

Taman Medan Selera Dato Tahwil Azhar, Ipoh is an open square marked with a historic clock tower in its centre and managed by Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh. It contains by a popular food court filled with 50 food stalls selling a variety of local favourites. Located at Jalan Raja Musa Aziz next to the bustling night market street named ‘Gerbang Malam’, it has been a place full of Ipohites’ memories since its establishment in the 70s.

Taman Medan Selara Dato Tahwil Azhar, Ipoh merupakan sebuah mercu tanda di kota Ipoh dan diurus oleh Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh. Dataran terbuka itu adalah tapak sebuah menara jam bersejarah serta medan selera popular yang mengandungi 50 gerai makanan yang menjual pelbagai juadah kegemaran. Taman ini terletak di Jalan Raja Musa Aziz bersebelahan jalan pasar malam yang digelar ‘Gerbang Malam’ dan merupakan lokasi nostalgik bagi penduduk Ipoh sejak pembinaannya pada zaman 70an.

Pride #3 is the continuity of the ‘Pride of the Portrait’ series that the artist started in 2010. The glass bricks pillar is projected with images of classic door and window frame designs, layered with traditional motifs. The Pride #3 piece aims not only to provide cheer to the space but to allow audiences to engage in the meaning of the piece. For the artist, light is the magic that attracts all living organisms and enables them to find their sense of ‘home’.

Pride #3 merupakan kesinambungan Projek “Pride of the Portrait” yang telah dimulakan oleh artis sejak tahun 2010. Arca kaca akan dihiasi dengan pancaran gambaran warisan, termasuk seni binaan pintu, tingkap dan motif traditional. Artis berharap menerusi arca ini dapat menceriakan kawasan ini dan berinteraksi dengan para pengunjung. Artis juga berpendapat cahaya melambangkan elemen yang dapat memberi panduan kepada segala kehidupan untuk kembali ke kediaman mereka.

Liu Cheng Hua
Artis/Artist

Liu Cheng Hua was born in Taiping, Perak in 1985 and obtained his Master’s Degree in Art from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Tanjong malim, Perak. Liu has been actively involved in the Malaysian art scene for more than 14 years. He started his first lighting based artwork in 2008.

Liu Cheng Hua dilahirkan di Taiping, Perak pada tahun 1985 dan telah menerima Ijazah Sarjana Seni dari Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Tanjong Malim, Perak. Beliau telah aktif dalam persada seni Malaysia untuk lebih dari 14 tahun. Beliau mula menghasilkan karya seni cahaya pada tahun 2008.

Melaka

Highly visible from Jalan Melaka Sentral, SDG Park Melaka is located at Sungai Melaka’s riverbank and is surrounded by a residential and commercial area. This project is also supported by Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah to activate the Sungai Melaka riverfront.

Jelas kelihatan dari Jalan Melaka Sentral, Taman SDG, Melaka terletak di tebing Sungai Melaka dan dikelilingi dengan kawasan perumahan dan perniagaan. Program ini turut disokong oleh Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah untuk menghidupkan Sungai Melaka.

RIVER LIGHTS comprises an interactive sculptural art installation and a multi-art outreach program inspired by the Melaka River, as a source of lifegiving water, provision, and connection. It draws upon the collective social history of Melaka and how that story weaves into each personal story.

RIVER LIGHTS terdiri daripada pemasangan seni arca interaktif dan program jangkauan pelbagai seni yang diilhamkan oleh Sungai Melaka, berteraskan air sebagai sumber kehidupan, dan perhubungan. Ia merujuk kepada sejarah sosial Melaka secara kolektif dan bagaimana kisah itu diadun dalam setiap kisah secara peribadi.

Alexdrina Chong
Penerbit/Producer

Alexdrina Chong is the founder of Social Collaboration, a multi-disciplinary collective with a mission to support social mission work through innovation, design and communication.

Alexdrina Chong merupakan pengasas Social Collaboration iaitu satu kolektif pelbagai disiplin yang mempunyai misi untuk menyokong kerja sosial melalui inovasi, reka bentuk dan komunikasi.

Suzy Sulaiman
Artis/Artist

Suzy Sulaiman is an award-winning installation artist, designer, and curator, who specialises in contemporary expressions of art in mixed mediums, and has received accolades at numerous arts events in Malaysia and abroad.

Suzy Sulaiman ialah artis pemasangan, pereka dan kurator serta pakar dalam ekspresi kontemporari seni dalam medium campuran. Beliau telah menerima pelbagai anuegerah dalam bidang seni di Malaysia dan luar negara.

Yeoh Ee-Leng
Arkitek/Architect

Yeoh Ee-Leng is an architect dedicated to environmentally sustainable and socially-responsible design, especially in healthcare and urban-transit projects, and heritage craftsmanship.

Yeoh Ee-Leng ialah seorang arkitek yang menjurus ke arah reka bentuk yang mampan terhadap alam sekitar dan bertanggungjawab dari segi sosial.

Batu Pahat

The Batu Pahat site is a roofed area located at Jalan Abu Bakar and is managed by Majlis Perbandaran Batu Pahat. It was a bus stop before it was converted into a covered square next to MPBP Tower.

Tapak karya ini merupakan sebuah kawasan berbumbung di Jalan Abu Bakar yang diuruskan oleh Majlis Perbandaran Batu Pahat. Sebelum disesuaikan, tapak itu merupakan sebuah perhentian bas di sebelah Menara MPBP.

This light-themed project, aimed as a form of public art, tells the story of recovery in the midst of living with a pandemic. ‘Alir Cahaya’ with ‘alir’ symbolising continuing with life and forward movement, also reflects the flow of current in a river or the electric current within a circuit. Meanwhile the element of ‘light’ symbolises enlightenment that can illuminate our thoughts and bring us a sense of warmth and security.

Projek yang berunsurkan cahaya ini membawa karya berbentuk Seni Awam yang bertemakan pemulihan dalam menjalani hidup menempuhi pandemik. Digelar ‘Alir Cahaya’, di mana alir bermaksud bergerak berterusan, serta gambaran tentang tenaga bersifat seperti sungai yang mengalir dan juga arus elektrik. Manakala unsur cahaya pula, bersifat menerangkan, memberi kehangatan dan membuat kita merasa selamat.

Farhan Halim
Artis Arca/Sculpture Artist

Farhan is inspired by abandoned spaces and buildings for his artwork, where he finds satisfaction in developing the construction elements that exist in the areas that he thinks are dear to the community. to the community. He always ensures that his design choices when it comes to shape and form will represent good values to the public.

Farhan sering mengilhamkan ruang dan bangunan terbiar dalam karyanya di mana beliau menemui kepuasan dalam membangunkan elemen- elemen pembinaan yang wujud di ruang yang dirasakan dekat dengan masyarakat. Beliau juga memastikan pemilihan bentuk adalah penting bagi memberi nilai yang baik kepada orang awam.

Aisyah Baharuddin
Artis Pelbagai Disiplin/Interdisciplinary Artist

Aisyah’s work uses numerous unique approaches and experiments, questioning and raising questions. The processing of her work is in various forms such as mixed media painting, living art installation, performing art, and even street art.

Karya Aisyah banyak menggunakan pendekatan dan eksperimen yang unik, mempersoal dan menimbulkan persoalan. Pengolahan karya beliau adalah dalam pelbagai bentuk seperti lukisan media campuran, pemasangan seni hidup, seni persembahan, dan juga seni jalanan.

Hariz Ahmad
Pelukis/Painter

Skilled in Realism, Hariz uses figures and nature as the main subjects for his artwork. Not only working with canvas, Hariz is also skilled in mural painting, and you can find his artwork in a few places around Johor.

Mahir dalam karya Realisme, Hariz menjadikan figura dan alam semulajadi sebagai subjek utama dalam karyanya. Tidak hanya di kanvas, Hariz juga mahir dalam lukisan mural dan anda boleh lihat hasil karyanya di beberapa lokasi di sekitar Johor.

Jaie Ramlee
Pereka Grafik & Illustrator/Graphic Designer & Illustrator

Jaie likes to capture almost anything by sketching as it translates words and emotion into visuals. Her artwork is mainly in the form of digital illustration and graphics for logo design, advertising, publishing, and packaging design.

Jaie gemar mengabadikan hampir semua perkara dengan aktiviti melakar kerana dengan melakar, ia dapat menterjemah perkataan dan emosi ke dalam bentuk visual. Karya Jaie lebih menjurus ke arah ilustrasi digital dan grafik untuk reka bentuk logo, pengiklanan, penerbitan, dan reka bentuk pembungkusan.

Kuching

Traffic Garden, Kenyalang Park in Kuching is managed by Majlis Bandaraya Kuching Selatan. It is located near a residential area, one of Kuching’s first People’s Housing Projects (PPR).

Traffic Garden, Kenyalang Park di Kuching diuruskan oleh Majis Bandaraya Kuching Selatan. Taman ini terletak berhampiran dengan kawasan perumahan iaitu salah sebuah Program Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) komuniti pertama di Kuching.

The concept of the Rainbow Ribbon is inspired by a series of social awareness campaigns represented by the symbol of the Ribbon with different colours. As the spirit of respect, diversity and unity is what we wish to represent with this installation, we have incorporated ribbon like geometry sit at the junction where existing and new developments of the Traffic Garden meet.

Konsep Reben Pelangi atau “Rainbow Ribbon” mengambil insipirasi daripada kempen kesedaran sosial bersiri yang menggunakan simbol reben berlainan warna. Bagi menunjukkan semangat hormat-menghormati, kepelbagaiaan dan perpaduan, kami meletakkan bentuk geometri seakan-akan reben di simpang pertemuan antara pembangunan sedia ada dan baharu Traffic Garden.

Wendy Teo
Artis/Artist

Wendy Teo is an ARB/RIBA (UK) Chartered Architect and founder of Borneo Laboratory, a multidisciplinary practice based in Borneo Malaysia. In Teo’s research and pedagogical direction, she and her team focus on embedding social-culture dialogue in forming architectural innovation. Teo was nominated by the British Council as a fellow in the 2018 ‘Woman of the Future’ South East chapter organised by AVIVA group.

Wendy Teo adalah arkitek berdaftar ARB/ RIBA (UK) dan pengasas Borneo Laboratory, sebuah praktis pelbagai disiplin yang berpusat di Borneo, Malaysia. Dalam penyelidikan dan hala tuju pedagogi Teo, beliau dan pasukannya menumpukan fokus kepada pembenaman pada membenamkan dialog sosial-budaya dalam menginovasikan seni bina. Pada tahun 2018, beliau telah dicalonkan oleh British Council sebagai felo ‘Woman of the Future’ di bahagian Tenggara anjuran kumpulan AVIVA.

Tham Chung Seng
Pengurus Acara/Event Manager

Tham Chung Seng is an event manager with 10 years of experience in the commercial and arts events management industry in both Malaysia and China. Some of the notable events under his belt include Tmall Double 11 Opening Extravaganza 2019 in Shanghai, Under Armour China Tour 2019 with Stephen Curry, Georgetown Festival & Rainforest Fringe Festival 2017 & 2018. Tham has been in close collaboration with Borneo Laboratory as a freelance Project Manager since 2018.

Tham Chung Seng ialah seorang pengurus acara yang berpengalaman dalam industri pengurusan acara komersial dan seni selama 10 tahun di Malaysia dan juga China. Antara acara yang pernah beliau terlibat adalah seperti ‘Tmall Double 11 Opening Extravaganza 2019’ di Shanghai, ‘Under Armour China Tour 2019’ bersama Stephen Curry, George Town Festival dan Rainforest Fringe Festival 2017 & 2018.
