Youth-led climate action is rapidly becoming a driving force in the global sustainability movement, and Southeast Asia is no exception. As the region confronts escalating environmental challenges, young people are stepping up, offering innovative solutions and advocating for stronger climate policies. This growing commitment will take centre stage at the Youth Climate Summit (YCS) Southeast Asia 2024, held from 14-18 October in George Town, Penang. With the theme Empowering Action for Nature, the summit will provide a platform for young people, particularly those aged 15 to 25, to drive initiatives and solutions addressing climate change.
The summit, supported by Think City and The Wild Centre – a natural history museum in New York – was first initiated by The Wild Centre in the United States in 2009. This year marks its inaugural event in Southeast Asia. Co-organised by various partners, including Penang Green Council (PGC), PowerSains, UOW Malaysia, Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC), and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), the summit promises to be a dynamic platform for youth to spearhead climate initiatives and solutions.
One of the key sessions, “Youth Activism: Catalysing Change for a Sustainable Future,” scheduled for the 15th of October, will feature Lily Lim, Co-Founder of YOUTHTOPIA, an organisation dedicated to empowering young changemakers across the globe. Moderated by Sofia Castelo, Think City’s Technical Advisor, the panel will also include Evelyn Teh, an urban and environmental researcher specialising in natural resource management, climate change, and sustainable urbanisation, as well as Rose Afrina Mansor, Think City’s Climate Resilience Manager. Together, they will explore the role of youth in shaping climate action through grassroots efforts and broader systemic change.
Lily emphasises the critical role of young people in driving sustainable change: "Young people have the energy, creativity, and determination to make a real impact. Our activism is not just about raising awareness, but about taking meaningful action to address the climate crisis and create a better future for all."
Her work at YOUTHTOPIA is rooted in the belief that young people, regardless of their background or experience, have the potential to lead effective climate initiatives. Since its inception in 2020, YOUTHTOPIA has focused on delivering peer-to-peer programmes designed to equip young people with practical skills for climate action. The organisation’s free online learning platform hosts over 150 courses led by international young changemakers, covering topics from environmental advocacy to sustainable development. "At YOUTHTOPIA, we believe that climate action starts with individuals," Lily shared in anticipation of the summit. "By giving young people the tools and knowledge they need, we enable them to take meaningful steps within their communities."
The summit will also explore how local youth-driven efforts align with broader climate objectives, such as those championed by Think City through initiatives like the Penang Nature-Based Climate Adaptation Programme (PNBCAP). This programme focuses on building climate resilience through nature-based solutions and involves local youth in projects combining environmental stewardship with urban sustainability. "PNBCAP is an excellent example of how youth can drive impactful, on-the-ground climate action,” Lily noted. “It shows that when young people are empowered, they can lead sustainable solutions that benefit both their communities and ecosystems."
The summit will tackle key issues such as climate education, food and water security, tourism and heritage, indigenous knowledge, and climate storytelling. Participants can also engage in expert sharing sessions, hands-on workshops, excursions, and the development of climate action plans, all with the goal of empowering young people to take the lead in building a sustainable future.
Lily hopes that participants will not only leave with new ideas but also the confidence to initiate or expand their own climate initiatives. "Events like the Youth Climate Summit play a crucial role by offering young people a space to learn, share, and be inspired by the experiences of others. These opportunities nurture informed youth leaders who can take meaningful action to address climate challenges," says Lily, wishing for an actionable roadmap for youth-led climate action by the conclusion of the summit.
For young people passionate about climate action but unsure where to start, Lily has a clear message: "To any young person passionate about climate action: start where you are! You don’t need to be an expert to make a difference. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals, learn from others, and take small, meaningful steps that will build up over time."
