Johor Area Rehabilitation 

Organisation 

 (JARO)

Founded in 1952, the Johor Area Rehabilitation Organisation (JARO) is Malaysia’s first rehabilitation centre for disabled citizens. Its goal is to train, care, empower the disabled community to be gainfully employed with life-affirming skills.

JARO has three sheltered workshops that specialize in book binding, basketry and tailoring to cater for the physically, intellectually and visually challenged. It aims to start a new lease of life for people to create a sense of independence and to reposition themselves with dignity in the mainstream of society. This positive attitude that JARO instills in them enables them to live a normal working life with pride and confidence.

This initiative is an adaptive reuse of the existing building which included an improved layout to allow seamless connectivity, purposeful facilities, and ensuring it aligns to universal design guidelines.
The project aimed to provide a safe and comfortable environment for the disabled community.

The Implementation

This partnership project with JARO involved improvement and upgrading works of JARO building into a new improved layout, façade and building condition, which is in line with the universal access guideline. The aim of the project was to increase the building accessibility and make it more inviting to the community, allowing seamless connectivity and safe and purposeful facilities. The Outcome
The building improvements were completed in 2019 which provides JARO a safe, comfortable and enhanced environment for the disabled community, visitors and public. It also provides JARO opportunities to enhance and capitalize the space with further space activation programming, product development and marketing to ensure its long-term sustainability and position itself as a hub for disability in the as the hub that serves the disabled community in Johor Bahru by:

Attracting and retaining right talents at both committee level and operational level

Redefining their business plan

Expanding their volunteer base and community engagement.
